About Our Service

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in the muscle (myometrium) of the womb (uterus). A woman can have one fibroid or many, and they can be of different sizes. Fibroids are also known as uterine myomas or leiomyomas.

Symptoms of fibroids can include heavy periods (heavy menstrual bleeding), painful periods (dysmenorrhoea), pressure symptoms and infertility.

The Fibroid Clinic provides specialist management for women whose quality life is impacted by symptoms caused by fibroids. The Fibroid Clinic provides a multidisciplinary team approach to care: collaborating with consultant gynaecologists, consultant radiologists, fertility consultants, specialist nurses, physiotherapists and external hospital partners.

Treatment Options

Our clinic provides tailored treatments for fibroids, addressing both symptoms and underlying causes. These include medical treatments like medications to manage heavy periods and pain, hormonal therapies such as the contraceptive pill or Mirena coil©, and injections (GnRHas) to shrink fibroids. Non-surgical options include uterine artery embolization to block blood supply to fibroids. Surgical treatments range from minimally invasive hysteroscopic resection to procedures like myomectomy (fibroid removal) or hysterectomy (removal of the uterus and fibroids).
