The EPAU department sees pregnant women up to 12 weeks gestation to establish the location and viability of their pregnancy. An appointment usually involves a consultation and a transvaginal ultrasound scan. Blood tests are often taken also.

The EPAU is in the main antenatal outpatient department.

GP referral, EAC referral, Self referral if you meet the criteria (Prev 2 misc, prev ectopic, prev molar). Unfortunately we are not have the capacity to scan everyone who would like an early pregnancy scan. You must meet the criteria for an appointment to be issued.

If you have heavy bleeding and/or pain, please attend the Emergency Assessment Centre (EAC). Following assessment in EAC, you may be referred to EPAU if appropriate.

Yes, you are welcome to bring your partner or a friend/relative. We do not allow children in the EPAU department for safety and sensitivity reasons, if at all possible.

On arrival you will check in with the clinic secretary and will be asked to empty you bladder. The doctor or midwife (sonographer) will call you for your consultation and scan.
You will be offered a transvaginal ultrasound scan. This is an internal scan which provides the best view of your pregnancy before 12 weeks gestation. It is completely safe and does not cause miscarriage.
Sometimes the sonographer may request a second opinion for a colleague. The scan finding will be explained to you and follow up as appropriate. You will be given a written information sheet explaining your consultation and scan findings and you will be given time to ask questions.

Yes, many women who need an early pregnancy scan are bleeding, we will have sheets and equipment to help manage this.

All appointments can be directed through Hospital reception: 01 408 5200, 24 hours a day -
Health Insurance:
We operate a direct payment scheme with VHI, Laya Healthcare, Irish Life Health, Garda Medical Aid, ESB, Medical Provident Fund, and Prison Officers Medical Aid. If you are covered by any of these insurers, the relevant insurance forms are signed electronically on your admission to hospital.
