About Our Service

The obstetric seizure disorder service provides comprehensive care to women with epilepsy during pregnancy and in the early postnatal period. The service also caters for women with a diagnosis of epilepsy for preconceptual advice.

We offer Weekly obstetric clinic in The Coombe Hospital and Twice monthly clinic with advanced nurse practitioner in epilepsy. Email: epicl@coombe.ie

FAQs

  • Women with epilepsy (WWE) under the care of a named neurologist can self-refer by contacting their local Epilepsy Nurse Service with positive pregnancy test.

  • Women who give a history of epilepsy/seizure disorder or are taking anti-epileptics at their booking history appt should be referred by booking midwife to service.

  • Women who develop a seizure disorder during their pregnancy should be referred by the treating clinicians/midwives through direct communication with CWIUH epilepsy team.

    Women attending the Emergency Room/Assessment Room/antenatal clinic with diagnosis of epilepsy/seizure disorder and pregnant (not already under the care of the pregnancy epilepsy service should be referred by the treating clinicians/midwives through referral form or direct communication with CWIUH epilepsy team)

Public Clinic

If you are living and working in Ireland and have the PRSI contributions or you have a medical card you can access free maternity and newborn care.

Semi Private Clinic

The semi-private clinic is a fee based option. Most women who choose this clinic use private health insurance to cover costs. .

  • Appointments:
    All appointments can be directed through Hospital reception: 01 408 5200, 24 hours a day

  • Health Insurance:
    We operate a direct payment scheme with VHI, Laya Healthcare, Irish Life Health, Garda Medical Aid, ESB, Medical Provident Fund, and Prison Officers Medical Aid. If you are covered by any of these insurers, the relevant insurance forms are signed electronically on your admission to hospital.
