The GP-Led Coil Clinic at the Coombe offers convenient access to intrauterine contraception (IUD) services in a supportive setting. Our team of GPs have many years of experience in all types of coil insertions and removals, providing expert consultations, fittings, and follow-up care to support informed, confident choices about long-term contraception.

We offer insertion of all copper devices, suitable for all women, including those who have not had previous pregnancies.
Coil Removal including:
*Please confirm that the coil is in the correct place on Ultrasound before attending the clinic.

Yes, we do not carry stock in the hospital, so if you do not have the coil with you we cannot proceed with the appointment.

Yes. Do not have sex for: 3 Weeks prior to your appointment if you are not using hormonal contraceptives or are using condoms or the withdrawal method for contraception, or if your current coil has expired.
1 week if your current coil is in date.

Preparation for the fitting can take up to 5-10 minutes, but the actual fitting of the coil only takes a few seconds.

If you are worried about possible pain during insertion, we recommend taking pain relief before the coil is inserted, preferably before you arrive to the clinic.
Afterwards you may feel some cramping, like period pain. This usually disappears after a few hours.

This can vary but it is usual to have the strings checked 6 weeks after it is fitted, with your own GP, and once a year thereafter.

This can be done by your GP, and takes only a few seconds. If your GP is unable to do this you can request to be referred back to our clinic.

All appointments can be directed through Hospital reception: 01 408 5200, 24 hours a day -
Health Insurance:
We operate a direct payment scheme with VHI, Laya Healthcare, Irish Life Health, Garda Medical Aid, ESB, Medical Provident Fund, and Prison Officers Medical Aid. If you are covered by any of these insurers, the relevant insurance forms are signed electronically on your admission to hospital.
