About Our Service

The Coombe Hospital’s Community Midwifery Department have a dedicated team supporting women on their pregnancy journey from first appointment through to birth and after the baby is born. We provide a range of services including antenatal care, check-in appointments to provide care and support throughout your pregnancy, support during labour and after birth.

Our community midwifery team provides 17 community clinics per week, ranging from first appointments to follow-up clinics. A full list of these clinics and opening hours are detailed below.

The Coombe Hospital’s community midwives are part of the wider hospital multidisciplinary team working to ensure all women have a safe and positive birth experience. We can refer you to a consultant obstetrician or relevant health care professional at any point of your pregnancy, labour or in the postnatal period if the need arises.

Your Pregnancy Journey

Community Midwives

A pregnant woman in a pink dress standing in a bathroom is being hugged by a young girl in matching pink clothes, with a plant and bathtub in the background.

The Coombe Hospital midwives will be part of your journey through pregnancy from the very start. In most cases, your care will be shared between the hospital doctors, midwives and your GP. If you attend the hospital as a patient of the public clinic, your care will be overseen by a consultant obstetrician.

We provide a dedicated service provided by our Community Midwifery Team - a team of experienced midwives who will look after you from your initial booking visit, throughout your pregnancy and for the first week after your baby is born.

Community midwives work between The Coombe Hospital and the local community. They provide maternity care to women who have no previous medical or surgical problems. Previous complications in pregnancy or birth may occasionally mean that care cannot be provided in the community setting.

Your suitability to avail of this service will be based on an assessment of your pregnancy as likely to proceed normally with minimal risk factors.

You can call 01 4085740 for advice on this or ask your midwife at your first appointment.

At this first appointment, you will be signposted to the most appropriate pathway of care for you during your pregnancy, according to your health and choice.

At your first appointment, your midwife will discuss your birthing options. You may wish to consider a homebirth, where support and care will be provided by a HSE self-employed community midwife, as long as your pregnancy is healthy and straightforward.

If your appointments are at The Coombe Hospital, you can ask your midwife/doctor to refer your care to the community clinics if appropriate.

DOMINO Midwives

The Coombe Hospital’s team of community midwives offer an additional pathway of care through their DOMINO Midwifery Team – a committed team of midwives for women with healthy and straightforward pregnancies.

DOMINO midwives work in the community and in the delivery suite at The Coombe Hospital. This level of care includes the same antenatal care in community clinics and postnatal visits to the home with the addition of a DOMINO midwife caring for you in labour too.

We support the use of movement, water and birthing aids during labour. This enables women to be actively involved in the birth of their baby.

You can avail of our community midwifery and DOMINO midwifery service if you are living outside of The Coombe Hospital’s catchment area, however we are unable to provide postnatal visits to your home.

How do I choose my pregnancy journey route?

    • At your first appointment, discuss your birthing options, including the location of where you would like to birth.

    • Select ‘community-based clinic’ on your registration form

    • Ask to be referred to a community-based clinic by your midwife/doctor in The Coombe Outpatients Department if appropriate.

    • Be in a healthy and straightforward category of pregnancy .

    • Wish to have a minimal intervention birth, for example birth without an epidural

    • Select ‘community based clinic’ on your registration form

    • Ask to be referred to a community based clinic by your midwife/doctor in our Outpatients Department if appropriate.

  • Early Transfer Home Service allows public and semi-private patients residing in The Coombe Hospital’s catchment areas (Dublin 8, 10, 12, 20, 22, 24, Lucan, Saggart, Rathcoole, Naas, Kill, Sallins, Johnstown, Newbridge) to leave the Hospital 12 hours after delivery if you and your baby are both well.

You will have ongoing postnatal care in your home, with daily visits from a community midwife up to and including your baby’s newborn screening test on day 5.

Unfortunately at this time we do not provide postnatal visits to the Celbridge area.
