Radiology/ Gynaecology Ultrasound

 The Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital provides the largest and most comprehensive Gynaecology ultrasound service in the country. A wide range of diagnostic imaging techniques are available for women of all ages with gynaecological, renal and abdominal concerns including bleeding disorders, pelvic pain, endrometriosis, ovarian cancer screening and sub-fertility.


If you have been referred to the Gynae Ultrasound Radiology Service to help find the cause of your problems, this web page has been designed to explain what is involved when you come for your appointment.

The information on each of the factsheets below should explain what will happen before, during and after each test. If you have a question that is not covered on this page, please ask any member of staff who will be performing your scan. They will be happy to answer your query.   • Prof Mary Keogan (Consultant Radiologist)
  • Edwina Quinlan and Patsy Crowe (Specialist Diagnostic Radiographers whom have post graduation qualifications in Ultrasound).


Referrals for Gynaecology ultrasound examinations should be accompanied by a doctor's letter. Patients may be referred by their GPs or hospital consultant. The telephone number for any queries relating to appointments is 01 4085577.


If you have an appointment you need to cancel, please ring the Gynae Ultrasound Service on 01 4085577.


You will need to have the following information ready:

  • your name
  • address
  • date of birth
  • the date of the appointment you wish to cancel
  • whether you wish us to send you a new appointment date (if you do not need another appointment, just say so in your message)
