The Cellular and Molecular Cytopathology Training School
The Cellular and Molecular Cytopathology Training School (CMCTS) is based at the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital and is supported by CervicalCheck and the Faculty of Pathology and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Under the directorship of Prof. John O'Leary, Laboratory Director and Registered Trainer of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland, the CMCTS provides a variety of bespoke training courses and events in Gynaecological Pathology with particular emphasis on Molecular Cytology and Molecular Pathology for Specialist Registrars in Pathology, Biomedical Scientists, Colposcopists in Training, Colposcopy Nurses and Pathologists. Dr Helen Keegan (Senior Molecular Scientist at the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital) co-ordinates the School's activities in co-operation with the School Director, Prof. John O'Leary.
Resources
In addition to a fully eqipped cytology training room which houses a x10 multi-headed microscope facility, students of the CMCTS have access to the facilities of the ISO15189 fully-accredited Histopathology, Cytopathology and Molecular Pathology Laboratories of the hospital. The Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital also hosts a Molecular Pathology Research Laboratory which houses state-of-the-art facilities for Human Papillomavirus testing on a wide range of commercial platforms. The CMCTS is linked to CERVIVA (The Irish Cervical Screening Research Programme, funded by the Health Research Board of Ireland) and is associated with Cervical Check. Through its multidisciplinary research programmes, CERVIVA leads research in the cervical cancer screening and prevention space both nationally and internationally across a number of themes: Molecular Epidemiology and Vaccination, Health Economics and Health Psychology (www.cerviva.ie). The CMCTS incorporates up to the minute knowledge gained through the CERVIVA research programmes into its curriculum and provides a framework for the dissemination of health services research knowledge directly to the health service professionals of the CervicalCheck programme.
