Postnatal

The arrival of a new baby is an exciting time for all family members. As this is a very demanding time for mothers, we encourage you to make time for yourself and your baby. Limit your visitors and ask friends and other family to give you this space by not visiting until you return home.

Following the birth, a midwife will assess the mother on the ward, discuss transfer home and make the appropriate arrangements with the Paediatrician to facilitate this. The timing of transfer home can be as early as 12 hours post delivery if all is well with mother and baby.

EARLY DISCHARGE

The benefits of early discharge from hospital are considerable for mothers and babies who have no medical complication after delivery. In keeping with best international practice, the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital has devised an early discharge initiative for mothers and babies. This intitiative does not apply to premature babies or twins.

Mothers and babies who are well can be discharged as follows:

  • between 24 and 36 hours after vaginal delivery for non-first-time mothers and their babies
  • at approximately 48 hours after vaginal delivery for first-time mothers and their babies
  • between 72 and 84 hours after Caesarean section for babies and their mothers who are 'up and about' and well

COMMUNITY MIDWIFE CARE AT HOME

Depending on medical factors and where you live, some mothers and babies are also suitable for discharge within 24 hours as part of the Early Transfer Home Scheme, which allows you to have part of your postnatal care at home, where you will be seen by one of the hospital's midwives. Each year, more than 1,000 mothers use the Early Transfer Home option, with many availing of the scheme on subsequent babies.
