Dr Sharon Sheehan, Master of the Coombe, welcomes the first National Maternity Strategy

I welcome the publication of the first ever National Maternity Strategy. This important body of work recognises the need for investment in our maternity services, in particular staffing and facilities.

The National Maternity Strategy acknowledges the important role played by all health care providers, individually and collectively. Providers of care to our mothers include obstetricians, midwives, neonatologists, anaesthetists, perinatal pathologists and psychiatrists, not forgetting the role of the allied health professionals in this multidisciplinary team.

It is absolutely patient-centred and has moved away from professional divisions and silos.

Not only is it a very progressive National Maternity Strategy, it acknowledges how essential a sound governance model, such as the Mastership, is to deliver clear lines of accountability and responsibility.

Health promotion has been emphasised and the Strategy expresses the importance of pre-pregnancy health and well-being.
