Coombe to host its first NICU 'Graduate Gathering'

On Sunday, 17th November, the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital will welcome back former patients of the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and their families at an event to mark World Prematurity Day 2013. The first Coombe NICU Graduate Gathering will reunite former patients and their parents with some of the people who cared for them.

The reunion will have a carnival-like atmosphere with activities for the children - face painting, entertainment, games and a puppet show - while parents mingle, chat and enjoy some refreshment.

A special visit by Dublin GAA hero Bernard Brogan and the Sam Maguire cup is also part of the festivities.

Each year, more than 1,000 babies from all parts of the country are cared for in the Coombe's NICU. The Graduate Gathering is an opportunity for parents to bring back their babies to see everyone. For staff, it is an opportunity to see how well the children have developed since being discharged.

One of the graduates expected is 2 year old Miracle Odunuga, who was born at 23 weeks and who weighed just a little over a pound. Miracle spend nearly two months in NICU untils he was well enought to go home. Today, Miracle is a lively little girl and is 'doing brilliant' according to her mother, Veronica.
