Within a Stone's Throw - new photographic collection of Dublin landmarks come to the Coombe

Within a Stone's Throw is a new collection of photographs featuring some of Dublin's most famous landmarks. The collection is the brainchild of former Master, Dr Chris Fitzpatrick and the stunning photography is the collaborative work of professional photographers Jim and Seamus Travers of Travers Photography, Clanbrassil Street. The photographs are of places, buildings, and artefacts that Chris frequently cycled past on his way to meetings in the city during his Mastership (2006-2012).

The collection, which has been kindly sponsored by Travers Photography, was launched at a preview evening by renowned artist, Dr Robert Ballagh, and the display will be placed shortly on permanent exhibition for the benefit of staff, patients and visitors.

Pictured at the launch are from left: Dr Chris Fitzpatrick, Dr Robert Ballagh, Mr Jim Travers and Mr Seamus Travers, of Travers Photography Clanbrassil Street.

Landmarks captured in the collection include 33 Synge Street, the birthplace of George Bernard Shaw, whose birth was attended by a former Master of the Coombe, Dr John Ringland.

Another of the photographs with links to the hospital is an image of the portico of the old Coombe Hospital. The building itself was demolished many years ago and replaced  in the 1960s by the present hospital building. Dublin Corporation (as it was then known) restored the portico and have since maintained it as a memorial to the many mothers who gave birth in the Coombe.

The Spire, Heuston Station, the Four Courts, Patrick Kavanagh and the Samuel Beckett Bridge are just some of the 54 images captured beautifully by Jim and Seamus Travers.
