Mastership Appointment Announcement - Board of the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital announce Dr Sharon Sheehan as Master elect 2013-2019

Dr Sharon Sheehan

25th May 2012: The Board of the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital (CWIUH) has today announced the election of the Master designate for the hospital for the period 2013-2019. Dr Sharon Sheehan, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and Senior Lecturer at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland will take up the post on 1st January 2013 and will succeed Dr Chris Fitzpatrick who has held the position since 2006.

Dr Sheehan will be the first female Master of the CWIUH and will be the 30th person to hold the position. The system of electing a Master is unique to the three Dublin maternity hospitals and was introduced in the CWIUH in 1867. The Master holds responsibility for both the clinical and the administrative decision making within the hospital.

Dr Sharon Sheehan is a native of Dublin. She graduated in medicine with honours from University College Dublin in 1998. Following internship she went directly into Obstetrics and Gynaecology training and has worked at all three Dublin maternity hospitals. While working at the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital as a Research Fellow, she conducted a multicentre randomised controlled trial evaluating blood loss at caesarean section.

Sharon was awarded a PhD from Trinity College in 2011 for this research. On completion of her specialty training in Ireland, she worked in Bristol as a Senior Clinical Fellow. She returned to Ireland at the beginning of this year and is working as a  Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist/Senior Lecturer at the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She has recently submitted her thesis for a Masters in Healthcare Management from the Institute of Leadership, RCSI. Dr Sheehan is married with two children.

The CWIUH has also recently appointed four new consultants in Obstetrics and Gynaecology - Dr Aoife O'Neill, Dr Nadine Farah, Dr Shoba Singh and Dr Caoimhe Lynch. Dr Lynch will become the fifth fetal medicine specialist appointed to the hospital. The current Master of the hospital, Dr Chris Fitzpatrick, said that he was looking forward to working with Dr Sheehan in the coming months in preparation for taking up her appointment, and in the coming years as Master. 'This is a very exciting time in the Coombe - with the appointment of a new Master and four new consultants'. The hospital expects to appoint new consultants in anaesthesia and paediatrics in the coming months also.

The CWIUH is a voluntary teaching hospital and one of the largest women and infants hospitals in the Republic of Ireland. It is a recognised centre of excellence for tertiary services including maternal and fetal medicine, neonatology, gynaecology and peri-operative medicine with over 9,000 mothers delivered, 1,000 neonatal admissions and 5,500 gynaecology operations per annum.

The hospital has a substantial academic portfolio in terms of multidisciplinary education, research and training. Over the past three years, significant infrastructural developments have been completed on the hospital campus and in early 2013 the hospital will complete an exciting capital project in the Delivery Suite including the development of a suite of new Labour Delivery Rooms and a purpose-built Emergency Obstetrical Theatre and Adult High Dependency Unit.
