Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital to mark International Women's Day in a unique celebration of poetry with top Irish writers - event to be officially launched by President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins

On Thursday 8th March 2012, the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital (CWIUH) will mark International Women's Day with a unique celebration of Irish poetry in the Coombe Hospital Education Centre. The event will be officially launched  by President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins and is part of an ongoing initiative to introduce poetry into the hospital. Members of the public are welcome to attend the event, which begins at 7.30pm (doors close at 7.20pm).

Poets Dermot Bolger, Katie Donovan, Paul Durcan, Paula Meehan, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Enda Wyley and writer Colm Toibin will take part in readings on the night and have kindly donated a poem/writing for display in the CWIUH corridors. Music will be performed by Colm Mac Con Iomaire. The event is taking place as part of Dublin Unesco City of Literature's Bringing it All Back Home series in association with Poetry Ireland, The Irish Copyright Licensing Agency and Dublin Unesco City of Literature.

The event has been co-ordinated by CWIUH Master, Dr Chris Fitzpatrick and Coombe mother and poet, Enda Wyley. Enda Wyley's most recent collection of poetry contains a number of works inspired by becoming a mother for the first time and she is now regularly contributing poems to the CWIUH website.

Dr Chris Fitzpatrick, Master of the CWIUH said: "The CWIUH is one of the largest providers of women's health care in Ireland with more than 9,000 mothers giving birth here each year and we are delighted to have the opportunity to join in the worldwide celebrations for International Women's Day. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to welcome President Michael D Higgins and a host of rich cultural talent into the heart of our busy hospital".

A reception will take place at 6.45pm in advance of the event and doors will close at 7.20pm. Members of the public wishing to attend should confirm with Laura Forde on lforde@coombe.ie or on 01 4085693 by Friday March 2nd.
